Tutorial Redesign

My first Major task at Grease Monkey Games, was to help redesign a whole a new First time user Experience for “Torque Drift”.

Based off player feedback and the analytics within the game, we could see that players were not sticking around because they weren’t learning how the mechanics of the game actually worked, and were getting frustrated.

To help fix this and improve player retention, we decided that the best way to teach the players the core mechanics of the game, was to break it down and teach each skill one by one. Let them practice it at their own pace, before then going on to learn the new skill. This became the structure for the new tutorial.

We also wanted to create a tutorial for Paint shop and Tuning, as these are major parts of the game too. However due to Budget and Time constraints, we could only implement the Fundamental tutorial. However these other ones were fully designed and almost made it in…

Redesigning the First time user Experience & Tutorial.

Old Tutorial

New Tutorial

  • Effectively teach players what drifting is & how to Drift in the game.

  • Successfully onboard new players.

  • Refresh Returning players.

  • Improve Player Retention.

Goals

What Changed?

  • Created a whole new environment for the game

  • Big open space, with minimal obstacles to crash into

  • Broke each mechanic down into its own section, and allowed players to “Learn at their own pace”

  • Players chose when to move onto the next section.

  • Didn’t force players to do unnecessary steps like donuts.

Script Writing Contributions for Torque Drift

Original

New

For Torque Drift, I was tasked with re-designing the tutorial. Our team consisted of 4 people

  • 1 Environment Artist

  • 1 Unity Engineer

  • 1 QA/Producer

  • 1 Designer (Me)

The main focus was trying to effectively teach players how to drift. As this was something that, after looking at the data players were really struggling with. This led to poor player retention rates. We also focused on keeping each “slide” as concise as possible, whilst also being interesting and writing dialogue that was engaging, as you can see in the scripts provided.

We also wrote scripts for a Paint shop, Tuning & Shop menu Tutorial, these were cut ultimately due to time restraints and lack of resources dedicated to recreating the tutorial, as we were in the midst of development on the sequel Torque Drift 2
